Tin has a crystalline structure, if a bar of pure tin is bent, it makes a distinctive screeching noise called a “tin cry”. It is an empirical way of checking the purity of a piece of metal. However, tin has the peculiarity of existing in several crystalline forms, including, for example, alpha form which is non-metallic. In beta form, it is usually a very malleable metal, which is why in pottery it is used in the form of an alloy, mixed with 5% antimony (another pure body) in order for it to be sufficiently rigid.
Tin is not very liable to oxidization. It resists corrosion thanks to the formation of a protective layer of oxide. Its natural colour is white (silver). Its grey aspect is due to oxidization (patina).
Tin melts at 232° centigrade and boils at 22,700°.
Tin is not very ductile, meaning it is difficult to stretch it into wire, but it can be laminated into thin sheets and possesses other properties which make it perfectly suitable for use in packaging. For example, it has no elasticity which is a very useful property when applying a pewter embellishment onto a rounded surface.
